The first step in repairing scratches in your wood floors is to assess the damage. Light scratches will require a different approach than more deep scratches will. If you find a minor scratch, try lightly rubbing fine steel wool over it. Rub along the grain of the wood to avoid making more scratches.
If you discover a deeper scratch, use some lightweight sandpaper and again be sure to sand along the grain of the wood. You can rub mineral spirits over the sanded area once you are finished to smooth it out as well as pick up fine dust.
The next step is to use a plastic putty knife and fill the scratch with a premixed wood filler. Be sure the color matches the color of your flooring and once you are finished allow the filler to dry thoroughly. It’s important that you only use a plastic putty knife as not to create new scratches.
After the filler is dry, use lightweight sandpaper (180 grit) and sand only the excess filler. Finally, refinish the wood using varnish or polyurethane or another similar product that matches the flooring. Avoid using a foam roller or brush so you don’t end up with air bubbles in the finish. Use a lambswool applicator or a natural bristle brush.
If you don’t mind a few scratches here and there, which are most often repairable, wood flooring makes a great option for your home. Father & Sons Carpet offers:
